Flowstone Saga is an intriguing indie game that blends RPG elements with puzzle mechanics, offering a unique and laid-back gaming experience. If you like Tetris, you’ll find an enjoyable experience here that was backed directly on Kickstarter. Set in the tranquil islands of Ocean’s End, the game follows Marai, a local explorer who discovers an ancient artifact granting her the power of “flow.” Let’s take a deeper look at Flowstone Saga.
Gameplay
The core gameplay revolves around a Tetris-like puzzle system where players clear lines to attack enemies and counter their moves. Flowstone Saga is a 16-bit, JRPG adventure with a middling story and hardly its main selling point. It expands on Mirai’s new ancient power and the conflict she must help to win. The world of Ocean’s End has easy puzzles and dungeons along with treasures and fun to explore
While the plot is passable, it doesn’t stand out from other JRPGs. However, the game’s mellow atmosphere and focus on world-building create an engaging experience as players witness the transformation of their surroundings.
I enjoyed casually playing this on a ROG ALLY, and it’s great to pick up and continue along the journey. This game is perfect on the go, and its gameplay style shines here. The gameplay is unique and fun and features a twist to the Tetris’s core to defend, attack, and trigger magic effects instead of having a traditional interface.
However, unlike Tetris, the game emphasizes quick line clearing over intricate setups. Players can opt for a turn-based mode, adding a strategic layer to the gameplay. One of the best elements of the game is the soundtrack, with some absolutely great tracks to listen to.
Combat Mechanic examples:
- Magical and elemental attacks
- Heat aura for increased damage
- Positive and negative effects block
- Upgradeable character classes
The combat is generally forgiving, allowing players to enjoy the game without mastering every mechanic without teetering on being too easy, thankfully.
Non-Combat Elements
Flowstone Saga extends its puzzle mechanics beyond combat, incorporating them into:
- Mini-puzzles
- Resource gathering
- Town upgrades and expansion
These elements contribute to the game’s progression as players watch their towns grow and evolve throughout their journey. I don’t personally care as much about these elements and found them to be just ok; I can see how some players can enjoy this, however.
Verdict
Flowstone Saga offers a relaxed gaming experience that may not satisfy hardcore RPG enthusiasts but is well-suited for those seeking a more casual adventure. Its unique blend of puzzle mechanics and RPG elements, coupled with the satisfying town-building aspect and Tetris-style gameplay, makes it an interesting choice for players looking for something different in the indie game scene.
