An In-depth Look at the Revolutionary Battery lineup from some of the Founders of Hyper
The mobile accessories market is crowded with power banks, but it’s rare that a product truly feels like a step forward. That’s why we were so intrigued when Barry Miller, one of the co-founders of the legendary brand Hyper, reached out to us about his new company, Better Mobile Xperience (BMX). Alongside fellow Hyper veterans Daniel Chin and Fred Ghaderpanah, they’re back to their roots with a new brand and a new mission: to fix what lithium batteries still get wrong, starting with safety. Admittedly, I am also a sucker for this aesthetic:

Their first product, the SolidSafe™ magnetic power bank, isn’t just another battery pack. It’s built with solid-state cells, which replace the flammable liquid inside traditional lithium-ion batteries with a much safer, solid material. This design removes the fire risk at its source – so the SolidSafe™ magnetic power bank isn’t just a new product; it’s a bold reimagining of what portable power should be. In a market grappling with recalls and lithium-ion incidents, BMX’s solid-state battery approach is both timely and potentially game-changing.
Build Quality and Design
BabelTechReviews received two pre-production 5K units in Titanium Black and Gold. Both feature a premium aluminum body, strong magnetic rings for MagSafe compatibility, and a soft-touch silicone back for extra grip. A clever USB-C lanyard strap conceals a built-in charging/data cable, doubling as a carry loop.

We’ve been testing a pre-production sample of the SolidSafe™, and even in this early state, it’s clear the team is focused on delivering a premium product. The feel and build quality are excellent. Here’s a look at what the final version will include:
- 15W Qi2 Magnetic Wireless Charging: The pack snaps securely to the back of your iPhone for fast wireless charging.
- Solid-State Cells: These cells are not only safer, but they’re also designed to hold their capacity longer and roughly double the lifespan of the battery.
- Full-Color LCD Display: The final units will feature a bright screen that shows the battery percentage, wattage in/out, and live charging status.
- USB-C Lanyard Cable: A clever addition that doubles as a charge and data cable, so you’ll never lose it. The company is even refining the lanyard color to perfectly match the battery body.
- MicroSD Slot (10K model only): A unique feature that adds onboard storage, making it perfect for quick backups on the go.

The initial lineup includes a 5K Slim unit and a more powerful 10K model. The pre-production units we have are fantastic, and we’re particularly excited about the potential for future models. With their robust safety and premium build, we hope to see BMX develop even stronger, higher-wattage units down the line, possibly diving deeper into the portable gaming market for devices that demand more power.

We confirmed consistent performance across devices:
- Wireless Charging (Qi2): iPhone 16 Pro reached 45-50% in 30 minutes, depending on usage. 5k is enough to charge the phone once, which should allow you to last all day.
- Wired Charging (USB-C): Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra uses Qi2 wireless charging, and wired charging worked amazingly for our needs. With a wireless charging case with MagSafe, it worked well. This is enough to make it a must-pack for travel since it is so light. Not quite enough to keep up with it at full power and usage, while gaming, we saw it maintain a percentage and barely increase it over time.
The 5K supports simultaneous wireless and wired charging and accepts up to 15W input, recharging fully in ~90 minutes. Output efficiency remained high, with minimal heat and no swelling—even under dual-device use.

Why Solid-State Matters
Unlike conventional lithium-ion batteries, SolidSafe™ uses solid-state cells that replace flammable liquid electrolytes with solid materials. This not only reduces the risk of thermal runaway and fires, but also enhances longevity—supporting up to twice as many charge cycles as traditional packs.
BMX showcased dramatic safety tests: SolidSafe™ units continued working after being drilled or punctured, while typical lithium-ion models ignited under the same conditions. You can see this on their Kickstarter page: here.

With over 2.5 million lithium battery recalls reported and airline restrictions tightening, SolidSafe™ is arriving at a critical moment.

Lithium-Ion Recalls
We did observe minor quirks typical of pre‑production units: the magnets on our Gold sample were slightly weaker than on the Black unit, and the display percentage sometimes lagged behind actual usage when switching between wired and wireless modes. BMX says these issues are addressed in the final hardware.

Lithium‑ion power banks have suffered high‑profile recalls. For context:

“We’re rolling out one of the first solid-state power banks built to fix what lithium batteries still get wrong: safety,” said Barry, co-founder of BMX. “SolidSafe™ replaces the flammable liquid in lithium batteries with a safer solid material, removing the fire risk before it becomes a problem. With battery fires in the news and airlines clamping down on carry-on batteries, safer power just makes sense.”
SolidSafe™’s solid-state chemistry virtually eliminates the liquid electrolyte, the main culprit in these recalls. Combined with Qi2 support, a built-in cable, and a smart LCD, SolidSafe™ makes for a more premium, safer package.
15 W Qi2 Magnetic Wireless Charging
SolidSafe™ also rides the wave of the latest wireless charging standard. It supports Qi2 magnetic wireless charging at up to 15 W, meaning it can snap onto the back of compatible phones (just like MagSafe) and charge them faster than older Qi wireless packs. Qi2 is the new update to the Qi standard, introduced by the Wireless Power Consortium to improve alignment and efficiency in wireless charging. By incorporating an array of magnets, Qi2 ensures the device is perfectly aligned on the charging pad or battery pack, reducing energy loss and enabling a consistent 15 W output for devices that support the spec.

For users, this means SolidSafe™ can magnetically attach to smartphones (including iPhone models and Android devices that adopt Qi2 or MagSafe-compatible designs) and deliver full-speed wireless charging without the guesswork of positioning. It’s essentially bringing the convenience of Apple’s MagSafe ecosystem to all, via an open standard. During CES 2024, Hyper’s Qi2 product lineup gave a glimpse of how Qi2 could streamline mobile charging, and SolidSafe™ builds on that vision with the added benefit of solid-state safety.
The Kickstarter campaign launched on August 5, 2025, with deliveries expected by October 2025. Initial colorways include Titanium Black and Gold, with more to come.

Conclusion
In day‑to‑day use, SolidSafe 5K didn’t feel like a Kickstarter experiment. Its solid build, magnet strength, and convenient lanyard cable made it disappear into our workflow. The only drawbacks are the limited capacity—5,000 mAh is just enough for one full phone charge—and the expected price premium once early‑bird tiers sell out. If you need multiple charges on long trips, the 10K version may be the better choice.
At an early‑bird price of $39 for the 5K model—half of its projected $79 retail price—SolidSafe 5K offers compelling value, especially given its safety pedigree and features. The 10K and 10K+ variants scale up capacity and add microSD storage for power users
The optional docking station charges multiple batteries at once and is bundled for free when backing three or more units.

We did have pre-production models as mentioned, so we had some quirks we noticed, like LED output lag, and some powering on and off issues on our gold model. That model for pre-production appears to be meant to be a deeper look at the colorway, as it also didn’t include the cable. More features will be added, and these quirks should be fixed in the final model.
Overall, BMX’s SolidSafe series brings much‑needed innovation to the crowded MagSafe battery market. By adopting solid‑state cells and adding practical extras like a full‑color LCD, integrated cable, and microSD storage, the company has made a power bank that feels safer and smarter than its peers. If you’re tired of worrying about swelling batteries or juggling cables, the SolidSafe 5K is an excellent portable charger that will give you peace of mind and a burst of power when you need it.
We want to express our sincere gratitude to BMX for providing us with samples. Their samples did not influence our review process in any way.
