Step into the checkpoint. Hold the line. Judge the living.
Introduction
Quarantine Zone: The Last Check drops you behind a fortified checkpoint in the middle of a
zombie outbreak and hands your absolute power over every soul seeking refuge. Across
seven in-game days, you’ll stamp documents, scan refugees for infection, haul crates to keep
the camp alive, and man a turret when the dead slam against the floodlights after dusk. I’ve
never played Papers, Please myself, but people who enjoy that brand of tense border-
control simulation will recognize kindred mechanics here; for me, the whole idea felt refreshingly new.

Core Mechanics
The booth is where Quarantine Zone truly shines. Every refugee presents a mini-diagnosis puzzle:
Visual sweep – First, you eye them for obvious wounds, discoloration, or erratic behavior. One fresh bite mark or blood-shot stare triggers an automatic red flag.
Symptom tools – Aim the infrared thermometer at their forehead; watch the digital read-out climb past the fever threshold. Swap to the UV lamp to expose hidden
rashes or dried blood. Listen for wheezing with a stethoscope if you’re still uncertain.
Guidebook cross-check – A color-coded medical manual sits open on the desk. Match the readings and symptoms to their charts, then decide: Camp (healthy), Quarantine (uncertain cases), or Liquidation (confirmed infection). A decisive thunk of the stamp seals their fate.
Presentation
Visuals
Inside the inspection booth, spotlight lighting, rain-soaked concrete, and chunky diagnostic tools provide a gritty, grounded aesthetic. The camp gradually changes as you make progress, with new tents and floodlights appearing as visual indicators of your efficiency.

However, the world beyond the checkpoint feels underdeveloped:
- Civilian NPCs lack believable behavior beyond scripted lines.
- The wider ‘city’ never moves. Zombies shuffle along fixed lanes, leading to a stark break in our immersion
Audio Design
Audio carries much of the tension:
- Fluorescent buzz and coughing in the booth set the mood.
- The base-defense phase is punctuated by brass-heavy action music and shrieking enemies.
Strengths
Forensic Puzzle Loop
The act of diagnosing refugees is tightly designed and consistently rewarding. Between forged documents, misreported symptoms, and visual misdirection, no two encounters feel exactly the same. Solving these puzzles feels like running a lab in real time and does not get old.

Replayability and Consequences
Every decision—whether to quarantine a suspect or liquidate a carrier—leads to branching outcomes in supplies, survivor count, and dialogue trees. This organic variability encourages multiple playthroughs.
Your actions shape the camp visually and mechanically. Perform well, and the zone feels like it’s evolving with you. It was fun to watch and see how we could progress through our border check and shifts.
Weaknesses
Static World
The “city” and its inhabitants feel lifeless. NPCs don’t react to gunfire or environmental events, and processed survivors simply vanish from the narrative.
Weightless Gunplay
Combat lacks punch. Zombie reactions are minimal, and firearms have no real feedback. There’s little visceral impact despite the chaotic context. Combat feels like shooting blanks and leaves much to be desired.

Busywork Mechanics
Manual crate hauling, a recurring task, feels like filler. You cannot delegate to idle NPCs or customize the camp layout, which hurts immersion and control. Some more development time/patches and expansions could lead to much more replayability, where now it can often lead to a tedious and lackluster experience.
Final Verdict
Quarantine Zone: The Last Check is an ambitious hybrid that combines medical logic puzzles, base survival, and FPS defense under one roof. Its strongest elements—refugee triage and visual feedback loops—offer a unique and rewarding experience. But without a living world beyond the checkpoint, and with combat still needing refinement, it currently sits as a promising proof of concept rather than a breakout hit.

If the full release adds more life outside the booth, reworks gunplay physics, and reduces busywork, it could become something truly compelling. Until then, this demo is worth your time—but keep expectations in quarantine.
