NVIDIA Computex Announcements: Quake II RTX, Wolfenstein: Youngblood, Sword and Fairy 7, G-SYNC Testing Phase 1 Complete; and more!

Our friends at NVIDIA have a lot of news coming out of Computex 2019. One of their biggest announcements that has been teased for awhile is that Quake II RTX will be available as a free download. We are going to have to find our original CD of Quake II so that we can benchmark it for you on June 6 when the RTX version is released.

On the workstation side, NVIDIA will be expanding its mobile RTX GPUs to include a new 16GB VRAM Quadro RTX 5000 GPU as part of a new RTX Studio mobile platform which NVIDIA. However, their press release is mostly of interest to gamers.

Here is a summary of what was announced earlier today in NVIDIA’s press release:

  • Quake II RTX — NVIDIA today announced that Quake II RTX will be available as a free download on June 6.

Quake II RTX is a technological tour-de-force of real time path tracing, a ray-tracing technique that unifies all lighting effects such as shadows, reflections, refractions and more into a single ray-tracing algorithm. The result is a stunning new look for id Software’s Quake II, originally launched in 1997.

Quake II RTX includes the first three single-player levels of the beloved PC gaming classic. Gamers that already own Quake II can experience the whole game in its entirety, including multiplayer deathmatch and cooperative multiplayer modes, all fully path traced.

  • Wolfenstein: Youngblood — NVIDIA and Bethesda Softworks today announced that they are working together to add next generation gaming technology toWolfenstein: Youngblood.

The next installment in the Wolfenstein universe will include NVIDIA RTX technologies and other advanced gaming technologies, including Microsoft DirectX Raytracing (DXR) and NVIDIA Adaptive Shading (NAS).

NVIDIA is also bundling Wolfenstein: Youngblood with select NVIDIA GeForce RTX GPUs.

  • Sword and Fairy 7 — the Chinese role-playing blockbuster is the latest in the Sword and Fairy series. Sword and Fairy 7 will be using ray tracing for reflections and shadows. We also revealed the first RTX game trailer.
  • G-SYNC Mini LED — Mini-LED Displays make G-SYNC ULTIMATE Gaming Monitors even-better. These new monitors, coming first from Acer and ASUS, will run at up to 144Hz at 4K, in HDR-10. But instead of a 384-zone LED controllable backlight, the new displays will feature 50% more, bringing the total to 576 zones on a 27” screen.
  • 3 New G-SYNC Compatible displays — In a new driver, available from 6am PT on May 27th, validation for a further 3 monitors will be introduced, bringing the total number of G-SYNC Compatible validated monitors to 28. The 3 new displays are the Dell 52417HGF, HP X25, and LG 27GL850.
  • ASUS BFGD and 35” Curved G-SYNC ULTIMATE Displays Coming Soon — Asus announced their first BFGD. Asus and Acer announced 35-inch curved G-Sync Ultimate displays.
  • G-SYNC Compatible Testing, Phase 1 Complete — At CES, we announced that we were testing over 500 displays to see if they would pass our G-SYNC Compatibility tests. We started with a list of 541. Of those, only 508 were available to test (others were discontinued or no longer available to purchase). Of those 508, 272 failed due to insufficient VRR range, 208 failed due to image quality or other issues, leaving 28 good enough to be validated for G-SYNC Compatibility. We’ve released a report on our findings which can be found here: https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce/news/g-sync-compatible-validation
